Places of interest

Bergerhof, also called Kapittelshof, gets its name from its owner.

The building was one of the courts (a complex of assets and revenues derived from them) of the chapter of Thorn. The bluestone frame of the building therefore indicates an important purpose.
The territory in and around Neer was either owned by one of the late courts or was subject to a cijns (tax), so that a cijns (tax) had to be paid here. Both courts had a central farm with large barns and stables, where the revenues of many late goods were collected.
The oldest mention of the Bergerhof dates back to 1234. In 1383 it was given on a long lease, and in 1490 "Der hof tgene berghe" with land in Bergerstraat was leased to Jan van den Berghe. The current building at 23 Bergerstraat was built around 1703 and rebuilt in 1801 by the Aquarius family.
