Places of interest

Hidden in the lush greenery of Roermond's city park lies Kasteeltje Hattem, the smallest castle in the Netherlands. Since taking over in 2004, this historic building has been carefully restyled, and in December of that year the doors opened.

History of Kasteeltje Hattem

Kasteeltje Hattem dates back to 1718 and is located in Stadspark Hattem, on the southern edge of Roermond. The oldest traces of the estate date back to the 15th century, when a residential tower was possibly built on the bank of the Roer River. The present castle, once known as Horst te Roerbosch, was then a country estate with a unique moat and a beautiful geometric avenue system.

In the 19th century, the castle came into the hands of the Michiels van Kessenich family. After several owners and a period of decline, the Municipality of Roermond purchased the castle in 1954 and redesigned the park in 1962 in English landscape style.

Kasteeltje Hattem is an important location in the region, known among other things by the internationally renowned Hammerveld Jazz Festival that was organized here in 1966.
