Outfoxing the Customs!
It was no coincidence that many cafes, shops, and farms were located near or on the border. These were perfect spots for passing smuggled goods. The bike tour starts and ends at one such ideal border spot: De Witte Stein.
Immediately after WWII, staples like flour, coffee, and butter were heavily smuggled. Women and girls concealed these items in their clothing. It was crucial not to get caught because if you were apprehended, the customs officers would place you near the heater, causing the butter to melt and catching you red-handed.
The bike tour winds through forests, heathlands, and cultural landscapes. Take breaks along the way to enjoy the panoramic views. And if you post a photo on your socials, be sure to tag it with : #hartvanlimburg
