Prehistoric urn field

Over time, a vast burial mound landscape was created where - it is estimated - over 3,000 dead were buried. The urn field on Raak (near Molenakker) was laid out in the Early Iron Age between 800 and 500 BC. The urn field consists of an area of about 3 hectares. Remains of 262 graves and grave monuments were found. Most burials involved burial pits with cremation remains. In 132 graves the remains were interred in an urn, in addition cremations in 4 longbeds were found. Longbeds occupy a special place in burial rituals, as the final resting place of family heads. In this Weerter urn field, the special position of these "most important" dead is accentuated by the fact that the grave monuments are situated in a separate zone.
