The interior of Sint Martinus church
Construction of the Sint Martinus Church began in 1456 and lasted more than a century. The church has a high, bright interior with three equally high naves, spanned by beautiful cross-rib vaults. The walls are decorated with colourful vault paintings, which are among the largest continuous late Gothic vault paintings in the Netherlands. One of the highlights of the church is the magnificent choir, which is enclosed by a richly decorated choir screen. There are several works of art in the choir, including a 15th-century retable of St Martin. The high altar, pulpit and baptismal font are also worth admiring.
Past and present
Sint Martinus Church has experienced various events over the centuries, including wars, fires and restorations. In World War II, the church was badly damaged, but fortunately it was fully restored in the years that followed. Today, the Sint Martinus Church is a lively parish church where Eucharist celebrations and other religious services take place regularly. The church is also a popular tourist attraction and is open for viewing.
